HISTOLOGY
The diffferent types of cells that are found in different parts of the gland are as follows:-
1.Chromophobes- These are small cells that do not stain and the nuclei are clumped together and occur in the centre of the anterior lobe. They do not contain granules.
2.Chromophils- The cells take colour. They are of two types
(a) acidophils- stained by acidic stains. They contain smaller granules also called as oxyphils or cells. (b) basophils are stained by basic dyes also known as cyanophils. They are larger in diameter and conatian smaller granules.
3.Pituecyte cells- They are found in posterior lobe, show neurosecretory granules with prominent nucleus and supporting neurological cells.
4.Herring bodies- Present in posterior lobe and store neurosecretory substance basically formed by the hypothalamus. They are released in the blood whenever required.
The function of the pars tuberalis cells are yet unknown which are very small in size.[B1]
